The newest version of Ford's midsized pickup truck has arrived — with a new aggressive-looking, desert-shredding option.

America's favorite pickup brand unveiled the 2024 Ranger on Wednesday, and the new truck is redesigned inside and out. Plus, Ford debuted a Raptor edition of the pickup, which is coming to the US for the first time.

That high-performance, off-road package has been super popular on the larger F-150 for years.

The new Ranger gets a more powerful engine in the form of a 2.7-liter, turbocharged V6. And Ford has spruced up its interior with bigger screens as standard equipment — and even bigger ones as options. Ford says it's upgraded the truck's interior materials, too.

The Ranger is slightly wider than before, so now it can carry cargo up to four-feet wide between its wheel wells. And Ford has introduced some new options like a step behind the rear tires.

The $56,960 Ranger Raptor gets a blocky "FORD" badge across its grille, flared fenders, knobby tires, and a whole host of upgrades meant for ripping across off-road terrain at high speeds.

It has a 405-horsepower, turbocharged V6, plus a long-travel suspension, underbody protection, and drive modes like "Slippery," "Rock Crawl," and "Baja."

Given how much Americans love their trucks — particularly lifted, aggressive ones — the Ranger Raptor's sure to be a hit among people who don't want to go full F-150. It'll compete with the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 and Jeep Gladiator.

"It provides a high-performance off-road truck to so many customers that don't want to go as big as F-150," Andrew Frick, Ford's VP of sales, distribution and trucks, told Insider.

Since it launched in the US in 2019, the Ranger hasn't stolen sales from the larger F-150 as much as Ford had expected, Frick said. That gave the automaker the confidence and flexibility to broaden the Ranger's pricing and release this beefier, pricier model, he said.

The Raptor also receives a special interior with sporty seats and orange accents.

Although you can now get a Bronco Raptor SUV and an F-150 Raptor (along with an even more extreme Raptor R), there are no plans to slap a Raptor badge on the Maverick, Ford's smallest truck, Frick said. That's an everyday truck that customers don't really take off-road.
